Practical Guide: 5G Campus Network with RedCap – How It Works in Industry ?
The Teltonika RUT976 is an industrial-grade RedCap 5G router designed for utilities, industrial automation, smart city infrastructure, and distributed monitoring systems. With four 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports, integrated RS232/RS485 interfaces, and support for Modbus, OPC UA, and BACnet, the RUT976 enables seamless integration into existing industrial ecosystems. Dual-SIM redundancy with automatic failover and 4G LTE Cat 4 fallback guarantee reliable connectivity even in transition zones or during network outages.
The RUT976 supports 5G Sub-6 GHz Standalone (SA) with up to 223 Mbps download and 123 Mbps upload (3GPP Release 17). When 5G coverage is weak, the device seamlessly falls back to 4G LTE Cat 4 (195 Mbps DL / 105 Mbps UL). The dual-SIM architecture with automatic failover switching based on signal strength, data limit, or network failure ensures mission-critical applications remain online.
Beyond four Ethernet ports (1x WAN, 3x LAN), the RUT976 features dedicated RS232 and RS485 interfaces (6-pin terminal block) for direct connection to PLCs, energy meters, and field devices. Full support for Modbus (RTU/TCP), OPC UA, BACnet, and DNP3 enables plug-and-play integration without additional gateways. Two analog/digital inputs and outputs (GPIO) on 10-pin industrial socket plus additional I/Os on 4-pin power connector provide flexible sensor and actuator connectivity.
The RUT976 can be powered via 4-pin industrial DC power connector with 9–30 VDC or via Passive PoE (Mode B, spare pairs). This flexibility reduces installation effort and costs in distributed networks. Power consumption: idle under 3 W, maximum under 7 W.
With IP30 rating, aluminum enclosure, and operating temperature range from -40 °C to +75 °C, the RUT976 is suitable for switchgear cabinets, outdoor installations, and motor housings. DIN-rail mounting is available with optional kit. The device is compact (110 x 50 x 100 mm, 295 g) and fits standard industrial enclosures.
RutOS (OpenWrt-based) features hardened firewall, DDoS mitigation, WPA2-Enterprise/WPA3 WLAN security, and comprehensive VPN options (OpenVPN, IPsec, WireGuard). Teltonika RMS enables centralized remote configuration, over-the-air firmware updates, and fleet management. WebUI, SSH, CLI, and REST API support advanced automation.
With 802.11b/g/n (Wi-Fi 4) on 2.4 GHz, up to 100 devices can connect simultaneously. Mesh support (802.11s), fast roaming (802.11r), and radio resource management (802.11k) enable robust and seamless WLAN connectivity in large deployments.
