Practical Guide: 5G Campus Network with RedCap – How Does It Work in Industry?
The Teltonika RUT271 is an ultra-compact, rugged 5G RedCap router for distributed IoT networks, street lighting, traffic monitoring, and decentralized smart city sensor deployments. With only two Ethernet ports and Passive PoE support, the RUT271 is perfect for applications where size, power consumption, and cost efficiency are critical. Dual-SIM redundancy and automatic 4G fallback ensure reliable connectivity even at remote locations.
The RUT271 supports 5G Sub-6 GHz SA with up to 223 Mbps download and 123 Mbps upload (3GPP Release 17 RedCap). This speed is ideal for IoT data upload, sensor networks, and real-time monitoring at significantly lower power consumption than full-band 5G. When 5G availability is limited, the device automatically falls back to 4G LTE Cat 4 (195 Mbps DL / 105 Mbps UL).
The RUT271 can be powered via Passive PoE (Mode B, Ethernet spare pairs) or via 4-pin terminal block (9–30 VDC). Passive PoE support eliminates the need for separate power supply in distributed networks, significantly reducing installation effort and costs. Ideal for pole mounting or building corner installations.
The RUT271 manages two SIM cards with automatic failover based on signal strength, data limit, or network unavailability. This redundancy is essential for critical smart city and utility applications and can be easily configured via Teltonika RMS.
With dimensions of only 83 x 25 x 74 mm and 130 g weight, the RUT271 fits into standard enclosures and on utility poles. IP30 rating, aluminum construction, and operating range from -40 °C to +75 °C with 90% humidity tolerance. DIN-rail mountable for standard switchgear.
The RUT271 supports Wi-Fi 4 (802.11b/g/n, 2.4 GHz) in access point, station, or mesh mode. Up to 50 wireless devices can connect simultaneously. 802.11r (fast roaming) and 802.11k (radio resource management) enable stable meshes for distributed networks without wired connections.
RutOS (OpenWrt-based) with hardened firewall, DDoS mitigation, WPA2-Enterprise, and WPA3 support. OpenVPN and IPsec enable secure VPN tunnels to central monitoring centers. Teltonika RMS provides centralized remote configuration, over-the-air firmware updates, and fleet management for thousands of devices.
