Simply installing charging stations is no longer sufficient – without a stable connection to the backend cloud, reliable monitoring, control, and billing of charging points is not possible.

This was precisely the challenge in a recent project by DIGITROL GmbH, a leading provider of future-oriented e-mobility charging solutions in the Rhine-Main-area: The installed charging stations in an underground garage could not achieve sufficient signal strength via their standard SIM cards. Without a stable connection, charging operations could not be reliably managed, leading to disruptions and inefficient processes.


A wired network connection would have required significant investment due to the building conditions. A standard SIM card solution failed because of poor network coverage. A system was needed that could function independently of existing cable networks, offer maximum availability, and be easy to manage.

The Solution: An Intelligent, Fail-Safe Network Infrastructure

In collaboration with ime, DIGITROL developed a networking solution specifically tailored to the requirements of charging infrastructures in challenging environments. By strategically deploying high-performance cellular routers, high-gain antennas, and a centralized remote management system, a solution was created that ensures the reliable operation of the charging stations on a permanent basis.

First, a site analysis was conducted to determine the optimal positions for routers and antennas. Then, a network infrastructure was implemented to ensure continuous connectivity.

The combination of high-performance hardware and intelligent software resulted in a completely independent, high-availability solution that can be monitored and controlled in real time.

A targeted use of the RUT241-Router and Wi-Fi integration of the charging stations led to additional cost savings since only one SIM contract is required—instead of equipping each charging station with its own SIM card.

The Result: Maximum Stability, Minimal Downtime

The success of this custom-built network solution became evident within the first few months of implementation. The charging infrastructure ran smoothly and reliably, without the previous issues caused by connection dropouts. More than ten installed charging points were seamlessly integrated into the system, enabling efficient and uninterrupted operation of the entire installation. Within three months, only a single connection disruption occurred—clear proof of the new architecture’s stability.
A major advantage proved to be the central control via the Remote-Management-System, which enables continuous monitoring and direct adjustment of all network components. Operators can react to changes in real time without needing to be on-site, significantly simplifying maintenance. The system is also easily expandable, allowing it to accommodate future demands—a key factor in the sustainable operation of modern EV charging infrastructures.

This significantly reduced maintenance efforts and eliminated the need for on-site troubleshooting in most cases.
